It was almost nearing a year of our existence in Mangalore. And we asked ourselves the question if we ever had a true fine dine experience? Sadly the answer was NO! When suddenly one day, we noticed a huge red sign which read “MAINLAND CHINA”. We couldn’t believe our eyes, the legendary authentic Chinese food joint had finally come to Mangalore! We had to see this place to believe it!
As the lift doors opened to the 3rd floor we were greeted with a blast of luxurious ambiance! The lighting, furniture, set up, tapestry, basically everything was flawless and up to the mark! We said to ourselves, fine dine has finally come to Mangalore!
The staff was extremely polite. As we sat and glanced at the menu we made a few quick choices. Their menu ranges from drinks right up to desserts but our only question will the Mangalore chapter of Mainland China live up to their quality served in 18 other locations across India?
First up was Soup and Dimsums! We ordered the Peppery Lemon Soup and the 8 Treasure Soup along with Chicken and Prawn Dimsums. The soups were excellent and the Dimsums simply melt in your mouth, don’t leave without trying a Dimsum there.
Down to some starters, we ordered Hunan Prawns which was simply superb as the prawns were extremely fresh, then came the crispy fried Sichuan chicken with smoked chilies and peanuts, now this dish tastes as sophisticated as it sounds! Not to mention extreme spice added to it! Finally we ordered The All Time Crackling Spinach which was as unique as it sounds; we will let you be the judge of this one.
Main course had arrived and we were pretty full already as the quantity was pretty good. We ordered for Stir Fried Chicken with Straw Mushroom in Chilly Wine Sauce this was indeed a unique preparation with and added kick by the Chilly Wine. Followed by General Tao’s Favorite Chicken, now this ladies and gentlemen is a dish par excellence, a must try dish, its unique flavor and taste will tickle your taste buds for sure. Then we tried the Stir Fried Vegetables in Spicy Sambal Sauce which is a must try for those hardcore vegetarians out there.
Moving on to rice and noodles we had the Ginger & Capsicum fried rice and Wok Tossed Hakka Noodles. The former can be given a pass as there is nothing much unique in it and the later is worth a try.
And finally came the desserts! We had The Honey Noodles with Almond Flakes and Steamed Coconut Dumplings with Honey Butter Sauce. These deserts make you fall in love with them from the first bite; they just simply take you to cloud no.9. TRY IT TO BELIEVE IT!
After such a hearty meal we came to a conclusion that. The principle of the cuisine offered at Mainland China is “harmony in contrast” which stems from the principle of Yin and the Yang. In simpler words it reflects the art of combining contrasting flavors such as sweet with bitter, sweet with sour, sweet and spicy and so on. The same goes for the combination of colours and textures of the ingredients. The challenge in creating the “harmony” in each of the dishes in the menu keeping the authenticity of the dish intact, has been more than successful so far, Compromise is never made in maintaining authenticity of the cuisine. The consistent effort to pick the delicacies that are more suited to the Indian palate rather than “adapting” to the same ensures the authenticity of the dishes.
In short MAINLAND CHINA HAS THE BEST CHINESE FOOD EVER! Eat it to believe it!
